WIP Roundup

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

This is the greatest number of works-in-progress I have had going at once since I started knitting. Let’s take a look, shall we? This is supposed to inspire me to finish things. Currently I’m working two rows on one thing, getting bored with it, working two rows on something else, getting bored with it, etc., etc.

I’ve listed projects in chronological order by start date. All projects are represented by obnoxious closeup photos that give you no idea of their size or true level of completion. You’ll just have to believe me.

Bristow

What? What is that?
It’s Bristow from Knitty, a cardigan for my mother. Done in Knitpicks Andean Silk.

How far are you?
I’ve done the back, the two fronts, and part of one sleeve.

I could finish this relatively quickly if I really wanted to. Bristow and Ihave a certain way of working - I ignore it for weeks at a time (usually because I don’t want to deal with the latest row gauge-related problem), then suddenly pick it up again and finish the piece I’m working on in two or three days without much effort. I expect to be done with this sleeve very soon. It only needs one evening of solid work. Maybe tonight? Maybe sometime this weekend?

Felted Tote

What? What is that?
The Farmer’s Market Tote from Knitpicks in their Wool of the Andres. I’m planning to line it with an old pair of jeans and use it as my daily carry-around bag.

How far are you?
I felted yesterday! It was exciting.

I was strangely surprised when I pulled it out to check progress after 5 minutes in the washing machine and it was actually felting. I think some part of my didn’t believe it would really work. It came out larger than I wanted (maybe I didn’t felt it enough?), so I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it. I don’t think I have enough jeans to line it, and it’s too big to be a daily carry-around bag. It’ll be good for beach trips and the like, though, if I ever get around to prettying it up.

Hanami

What? What is that?
It’s the Hanami Stole from Pink Lemon Twist in Knitpicks Alpaca Cloud. So far this seems like a Melanie Gibbons-themed post. She designed Bristow, too. I imagine this stole as a wall hanging of sorts. I have half a huge house to help decorate next year!

How far are you?
Um, not very. I’ve done about half of one repeat.

I keep making mistakes! Last time I did a knit row I counted my stitches to make sure they were right, and still found the count to be off on the next row! I can’t win. I think I’m going to rip out the amount of pattern I’ve done and start over.

Son of the Harf/Scat

What? What is that?
Another Hoodie Scarf [PDF] from d-made in Knitpicks Mainline. I made one of these for a friend early last spring, and my then-roommate liked it so much I’m making him one of his own.

How far are you?
I’ve cast on for the bottom of the hood portion and knit a couple rows beyond it.

Luna Moth Shawl

What? What is that?
It’s the Luna Moth Shawl from Elann. I’m using a yarn (Knitpicks Shadow) much thinner than the one called for, and I’m just going to keep doing pattern repeats until I get sick of it and can’t take it any more.

How far are you?
Practically two repeats.

This was going well, but stalled when I found a mistake that requires either tinking back at least two rows or having the pattern disrupted (again) by incorrect stitches. Haven’t felt like picking it back up.

Double Spiral Mosaic Socklets

What? What is that?
Ankle socks with mosaic (slip stitch) patterning - Double Spiral from Sensational Knitted Socks in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock. The pattern for the sock is from the book, too, though I modified it quite a bit.

How far are you?
A little more than half through the second pattern repeat. I need about two more inches, then the toe.

These are slow going, as they’re knit on US 0 needles. Plus the yarn keeps twisting up , so I have to wrap an elastic around a ball every two rows (when i switch colors) and let it dangle. This is the type of irritating non-knitting knitting task that makes me relectant to work on something for hours at a time.

Cranberry Textured Rib Socks

What? What is that?
“Woolies” for my dad in Textured Rib from Sensational Knitted Socks. Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport. This yarn is fantastic - extremely soft and squishy. I think these socks will be quite cozy.

How far are you?
I just finished the cuff on the first sock and have knit a few pattern repeats. I started these so I would have a portable project to carry around and knit in odd moments.

I vow that I will not start new projects before finishing or abandoning (for a good reason) these. I don’t have to finish all of them, just the applicable ones - I can’t start (OR BUY YARN FOR) a new shawl until I finish either Hanami or Luna, no casting on for new easy socks before finishing the cranberry ones, no casting on for complicated socks before finishing the anklets, no sweaters until Bristow is complete, and so on.
