Leaves are turning, and so are spindles!
Friday, August 31st, 2007Yesterday’s mail brought both packages I had been waiting for. You’re probably only interested in one of them.
On top is my new spindle, a Bosworth mini, 18g with a canarywood whorl. I bought it because my old spindle is a) too heavy for some of the yarns I want to spin and b) not pretty. The Bosworth is VERY pretty. On bottom is the textbook for the math class I’m taking this semester. It’s my first college math course, which I’m a little ashamed of. I used to really like math in high school, and even considered majoring in it at one point. But I seem to have forgotten all about it. My AP Calc teacher would be so disappointed in me (sorry, Mr. Carver!). Maybe I’m just intimidated by my many math major friends. At least I’ll never lack in homework help…
But you don’t want to hear about math. You want to hear about fiber!
I ordered my spindle from The Bellwether. It came with a “poof” of Sage Hill wool from Three Bags Full (more like a handful, really - it was generous) that I was too eager to spin it to take a picture of it.
Hand for scale and top view for prettiness.
The fiber was designed to have lots of noils and make a tweedy, roughish yarn. It was kind of soothing, knowing that all those lumps were supposed to be there.
The arrival of my oh-so-fascinating math book has really brought home that fact that classes are starting in four days. The summer is For Reals Over. Looking back at the knitting projects I had planned for the summer, I see that I accomplished 3.5/7 of them - exactly half. I learned to spin and knit a second harf/scat, a shawl, and one of two pairs of parent-socks (thats the .5). Not too bad.
I think this semester is going to be… different. My best friend is abroad, and I’m living across campus from most of the other juniors - but I am living in an awesome house with three awesome people. I’ll just have to make an effort to go out more. My tendency is to sit in my room and wait for other people to come amuse me. I have a feeling that isn’t going to happen this year. Just like I do every semester, I am vowing to do all the reading for all of my classes. All of it! At least all the important stuff. No more will I go to the library, read two paragraphs, get a drink of water, read a paragraph, check my email, read two sentences, and then decide I’m really tired and would much rather go home and knit. That’s what I spent most of last semester doing. No more! I am Studious Janet! I read so many books! My professors will be so impressed with my brain.
